IN FROM THE OUT: PUBLIC ART
This body of work focuses on public art and the environment. I sited unsealed concrete sculptures outdoors, in public event spaces, community centers, lakes, rivers, creeks, parks, forests, and yards. The unsealed surfaces of the work were stained and impacted by the environment in which they were installed. On some pieces, plant, fungi, and slime growth began. In others, insects and other creatures moved into the forms. Dirt and debris washed over and covered some parts of the sculptures. Others were minimally affected and looked almost untouched. After deinstallation from their outdoor environment, the forms were sealed and most were installed in gallery locations. The time-based artwork shows the effects of the environment on an object. The range of surfaces and effects of the environments varied greatly, showing differences among environments and how significant surroundings are. Art should be in galleries, museums, out in the community, and in the middle of nowhere. Art should be accessible to everyone, relevant, and thought-provoking.
